Mambrui is a coastal village north of Malindi, beyond the mouth of the Sabaki river. It is a Swahili settlement of long standing: in the cemetery there is a pillar tomb decorated with inset porcelain, and the history of the place is bound up with the trade of the Indian Ocean.
North of the village the coast changes: the sand rises into dunes and the landscape becomes open and empty. This is the stretch generally called “Robinson” here, though the name is used for several different places along this coast: always ask which one before booking anything.
The mouth of the Sabaki, between Malindi and Mambrui, is a wetland where fresh water, sand and sea mix: it is among the most interesting areas on the coast for water birds and waders, and it is monitored by local ornithological groups.
Mambrui is a lived-in and largely Muslim village. You visit it dressed modestly, you ask before photographing people and you do not enter places of worship without permission. They are simple rules, and they always apply.
It can be visited all year round. The dunes and the beach are best tackled in the late afternoon, as the sun drops: in the middle of the day there is no shade and the sand burns. Between June and August the wind is stronger and lifts the sand.
From Malindi you carry on north across the bridge over the Sabaki: the road is tarmac as far as the village, while the accesses to the dunes and the beach are on sand and need a suitable vehicle.
From Watamu you go via Malindi. The day is often combined with Marafa, which lies inland in the same area: it makes for a long programme, and I say so before proposing it.
